This easy Bolognese is designed to be minimal ingredient, family friendly, and adaptable for multiple food allergies and FPIES-safe options (as directed by your medical team). Always cross‑check ingredients and talk with your child’s allergist before introducing new foods.

Allergy‑Friendly Ingredient Swaps

Use this section to adapt the recipe to your child’s allergy profile.

1. Protein Swaps

  • If beef is not safe:
    • Use ground turkey, chicken, lamb, or pork (if safe).
  • For plant‑based (no meat, no dairy, no egg):
    • Use crumbled firm tofu, lentils, or finely chopped mushrooms (if safe) instead of ground meat.
    • Add 1–2 tbsp extra oil to mimic the richness of meat.

2. Tomato Concerns

If tomatoes are not safe or are an FPIES trigger, you can make a “white” Bolognese‑style sauce:

  • Replace crushed tomatoes with:
    • 1 cup safe bone broth or vegetable broth +
    • 1/2–1 cup safe milk (oat, rice, coconut, or formula etc., if tolerated), or extra broth.
  • Simmer the browned meat with broth and safe milk until slightly reduced and thickened. You can add in pureed carrots (if tolerated) for color.
  • Add safe herbs as tolerated (thyme, parsley, etc.). I use this Italian Seasoning.

3. Onion & Garlic Free

For kids who can’t tolerate onion or garlic:

  • Omit both completely.
  • Use only safe oil + meat + tomatoes/broth.
  • Add gentle flavor with:
    • A small bay leaf during simmer (removed before serving),
    • A tiny pinch of safe herbs,
    • Longer simmer time for deeper flavor.

4. Gluten‑Free / Wheat‑Free

If gluten or wheat is an allergy or FPIES trigger:

  • Use gluten‑free spaghetti made from:
    • Brown rice
    • Corn
    • Quinoa
    • Legumes (chickpea, lentil) – only if safe and already trialed
  • Check labels carefully for may contain warnings and cross‑contamination.

5. Dairy‑Free

This base recipe is naturally dairy‑free, but if you usually top pasta with cheese:

  • Use nut‑free, dairy‑free cheese (if tolerated).

6. Soy / Egg / Nut Management

  • The basic recipe uses no eggs, no nuts, no dairy, no soy (unless your oil, broth, or add‑ins contain them).
  • Always check:
    • Canned tomatoes for added ingredients
    • Pasta label for “may contain” soy, egg, or nuts
    • Broth for hidden allergens or “natural flavors”

Serving & Storage

  • Serving:
    • Serve warm, slightly cooled for toddlers and babies.
    • If trialing a new ingredient (new meat, new pasta, new tomato brand), serve a small portion first, following your FPIES protocol.
  • Storage:
    • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
    • Freeze sauce (without pasta) in small portions for quick, safe meals later.
    • Reheat thoroughly and add a splash of water if the sauce thickens too much.

This simple Bolognese is meant to be a safe, flexible base you can adjust as your child’s safe food list grows. If you share your specific allergens or FPIES triggers in the comments below, I can help tailor this recipe even more precisely to your family’s needs.

Minimal Ingredient Bolognese Recipe for Sensitive Tummies

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp tbsp olive oil or safe oil
  • 1 small onion very finely chopped (omit if not safe)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced (omit if not safe)
  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef, turkey, chicken, pork or other safe ground meat
  • I like to use ground chicken since my little one can’t have ground beef
  • 1 plain crushed or pureed tomato or tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water or safe broth
  • For a creamier version for your little you can add in some of their formula!
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste; reduce for little kids
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano or basil omit if herbs are not safe yet

For the pasta:

  • 12 oz 340 g safe spaghetti
  • classic wheat spaghetti OR
  • gluten‑free rice corn, or legume pasta (if safe)
  • Salt for the pasta water optional / as tolerated

Instructions

Cook the Pasta

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • Add salt if safe, then add spaghetti.
  • I like to break the spaghetti into thirds so the noodles are shorter for kids.
  • Cook according to package directions until al dente.
  • Drain and set aside. For extra safety, rinse if you’re worried about cross‑contamination from the pot or water.

Start the Sauce Base

  • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add finely chopped onion and cook 3–4 minutes until soft (skip this part or shorten if your child is sensitive).
  • Add garlic and cook approximately 30 seconds, just until fragrant, not browned.
  • Brown the Meat
  • Add ground meat to the pan.
  • Break it up with a spatula and cook until fully browned and no pink remains.
  • If needed, drain off excess fat to keep it gentle on sensitive tummies.

Add Ins & Simmer

  • Add in milk or dairy free option (can also be formula) and cook with the meat until almost fully evaporated
  • If I am cooking for the entire family or friends, I do this again but with dry white wine (but skip this part for littles).
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes or paste and 1/2 cup water or safe broth.
  • Stir in salt and dried herbs (if tolerated).
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, then lower heat to low.
  • Simmer uncovered 15–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and flavors blend.
  • Taste and adjust: more salt, more water if too thick, or longer simmer if too thin.

Combine & Serve

  • Add cooked spaghetti to the pan with the Bolognese, or serve sauce spooned over individual bowls of pasta.
  • Toss gently to coat if mixing together.
  • Cool slightly for young children and serve.

Optional Add‑Ons (Only If Safe for Your Family)

Always introduce new add‑ins one at a time per your allergist’s guidance.

  • Finely grated carrot or zucchini – added with the onion for extra veg.
  • Celery – classic in Bolognese, added with onion.
  • Black pepper – only if tolerated.
  • Fresh basil or parsley – stirred in at the end.
  • Dairy‑free “parm” sprinkle – if you have a safe store‑bought or homemade version.

An Allergy Mama on a Mission

As an allergy mama to an amazing daughter who has over 17 FPIES triggers, navigating allergies was something I never even imagined a year ago, and now I am able to cook anything from scratch and do whatever I can to keep my little girl safe.

When we first received our daughter’s FPIES diagnosis, I felt completely overwhelmed. The list of trigger foods seemed endless, grocery shopping became a two-hour ordeal of reading every single label, and I found myself crying in the kitchen more times than I care to admit. If you’re reading this, you might know exactly how that feels.

But here’s what I’ve learned: you are stronger than you think, and safe doesn’t mean boring.

Through countless hours of research, trial and error, and many sleepless nights worrying about reactions, I’ve discovered that cooking from scratch isn’t just possible – it’s empowering. I’ve learned to create versions of our family’s favorite meals that are not only safe for my daughter but delicious for our whole family.

This blog is my way of sharing that journey with you. Every recipe here has been tested in my own kitchen, approved by my little taste-tester, and created with the understanding that safety always comes first. You’ll find detailed allergen information, substitution suggestions, and the real-life tips that have made our FPIES journey manageable.

Whether you’re newly navigating this world like I was a year ago, or you’re a seasoned allergy parent looking for fresh meal ideas, I hope you’ll find recipes here that bring joy back to your kitchen and peace of mind to your table.

You’ve got this, mama. Let’s cook safely together.
